How much engine power does an auto box steal ?

I have a 1994 BMW 325i - im told the manual is quicker - mine is fast enough for me! also why does an auto box affect fuel consumption? finally is there any value is placing the box in N (neutral) when at traffic lights or in traffic (this is my first auto!)
